Careers in Agriculture & Food (Senior Level)

Your students will learn about the exciting and vast opportunities that exist in the agri-food industry. Students will learn that no matter where their interest lies (whether they are interested in science or business etc.), there are exciting career opportunities in the agriculture sector.

Role of Technology in the Food System

Your students will critically examine the impact that agriculture technologies have on crop yields, the environment, cost of food, on farm workers, society etc.

Biotechnology & Food Production

Your students will analyze the different types of plant breeding, the GMO process and weigh a variety of perspectives on the issue of genetically modified organisms and their impact on human health, environment, and society.

Animal Anatomy & Housing 

Your students will explore the anatomy of livestock animals and learn about how the physiological of livestock animals is taken into consideration when it comes to housing as well as overall animal care and welfare.

Tourism in Food, Beverage & Farming

Your students will discover and explore the various opportunities across the agriculture and food sector related to tourism and the impacts that it has on local communities.

Sustainability in Agriculture

Your students will explore the three pillars of sustainability in the agriculture and agri-food industry in Canada and investigate the impacts that they have on society and the future of Canadian agriculture.

Environmental Stewardship

Your students will explore the various ways that the agriculture and food industry are working towards more sustainable practices while applying their knowledge to real world situations.

Climate Change: Going Global

Your students will critically analyse the impacts of climate change on the Canadian agriculture and food sector and understand how society can adapt to climate change in practical ways.

Marketing & Design 

Your students will identify various marketing and design techniques used in the agriculture and food industry and how it impacts consumer choices. Students will also explore the global supply chain and the impacts that it has on agriculture and food production.

Food Safety: Challenges & Solutions

Your students will explore the various factors that contribute to food safety in Canada and will have the opportunity to learn about the ways in which food safety is practiced at all stages of food production. Additionally, students will examine the various challenges faced in the food safety system and apply appropriate solutions for each.

Food Waste 

Your students will explore how food waste and food insecurity are interconnected while also examining various strategies to eliminate food waste.

Local & Global Food Systems 

Your students will explore what a food system is as well as the impacts that local food has on the global community.

Careers in Agriculture & Food (Intermediate Level) 

Your students will learn about the exciting and vast opportunities that exist in the agri-food industry. Students will learn that no matter where their interest lies (whether they are interested in science or business etc.), there are exciting career opportunities in the agriculture sector.

Exploring Technology & Innovations

Your students will explore various technologies that will impact the future of farming, understand the importance of sustainability when implementing technology, and explain how consumers influence the production of food.

Introduction to Biotechnology

Your students will explore and understand the relationship between agriculture and plant breeding, genetically modified organisms and biotechnology. Students will discover the different genetically modified products produced in Canada and why.

Animals & Cells: The Needs of Living Things 

Your students will explore how proper cell function impacts the overall health and wellbeing of animals, while also critically examining the use of antibiotics, growth hormones, technologies, consulting various experts, etc. as available tools for producers to utilize, when necessary, as part of a holistic approach to animal care.

Conventional & Organic Agricultures 

Your students will critically examine both organic and conventional methods of production, focusing on the use of pesticides.

Agriculture in Canada

Your students will explore a broad overview of Canadian agriculture including a look into Canada’s agriculture history and the innovations that have taken place, what grows where, various production methods, and a general outline of issues in Canadian agriculture.

Environmental Initiatives

Your students will analyse various environmental issues related to the agriculture industry and examine the various initiatives the agriculture and food industry implement to reduce environmental impact. Students will look at how they work to improve soil, air, and water quality as well as biodiversity.

Climate Change 

Your students will critically analyse the impacts of climate change on the Canadian agriculture sector and explore various strategies to adapt to and mitigate climate change while continuing to be sustainable.

Role of Social Media

Your students will explore agriculture and food from a business perspective, including how social media can have a positive and/or negative impact on businesses, and the agriculture and food sector as a whole.

Food Safety: From Earth to Fork

Your students will explore the various factors that contribute to food safety in Canada and practices in place from the farm, the primary source, to the end product, in order to ensure wellness for the Canadian consumers.

Food Security 

Your students will explore the factors that contribute to local and global food security and critically review methods which work to eliminate food insecurity.

Local Food 

Your students will explore what local, healthy food is and how they can incorporate that into their daily eating habits.

Biodiversity on the Farm

In the “Biodiversity on the Farm” workshop, your students will be introduced to the relationship between agriculture and the nature that surrounds it. They will learn the importance of being a good steward of the environment and how healthy biodiversity serves agriculture. Finally, they will discover the key ways farmers work to feed a growing population while protecting biodiversity on and around their farms.

Footprints of Food Waste

In the “Footprints of Food Waste” workshop, your students will explore where food can be lost or wasted throughout the entire food system. They will learn how food waste impacts our natural environment and how people are impacted by food waste. Finally, they will brainstorm and learn some key strategies for reducing the amount of food waste in their own lives.

Agriculture: Past, Present & Future 

Your students will explore the history of agriculture and how it has changed over the years as well as the wide variety of individuals involved in the food system.

From This to That: Food Processing in Canada

Your students will explore what food processing is and identify various methods of food processing in an interactive and engaging workshop.

Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide

Your students will explore what local, healthy food is and how they can incorporate that into their daily eating habits.
