Food Waste, new resources and student tour highlight AgScape AGM

Milton, ON [May 3, 2017] – AgScape announced four new high school resources as part of a $29,600 Seed grant, made by the Ontario Trillium Foundation in 2016, at their annual meeting on May 3. Hosted at the University of Guelph, the event included AgScape’s annual business meeting, a student tour of the University of Guelph’s Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre, a speaker panel and roundtable activities that saw high school students and industry stakeholders working together.

“Our agri-food sector is rich with innovative and high-tech opportunities. We want to make sure all students are aware of these exciting opportunities and understand more about the agri-food sector,” says Keith Currie, AgScape Chair.

The year-long Seed grant from the Foundation funded the development of four new ‘contextualized learning activities (CLA’s) required for the high school level ‘Specialist High Skills Major’ program focussing on science, math, language and business. The science lesson plan was launched in late 2016 and focused on the health of the Great Lakes. The remaining lessons will be launched throughout 2017.

“AgScape has an impressive record of developing excellent agriculture related curriculum for Ontario schools.  I am pleased that this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant will enable AgScape to develop additional material which can be used in Ontario schools to support our Specialist High Skills Major in Agriculture Program which prepares our students for careers in the agri-food sector,” says the Hon. Liz Sandals, MPP for Guelph.

The Hon. Indira Naidoo-Harris, MPP for Halton said, “the agri-food sector is a vital part of Ontario’s economy. I’m pleased more young people are being given the chance to enhance their skills and knowledge in this key innovative sector. I’m proud that our government is supporting AgScape in Milton, with this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant.”

The annual meeting hosted an engaging panel discussion ‘Trashing Food Waste’ with University of Guelph Professors Ralph C. Martin and Michael von Massow. The day wrapped with a roundtable discussion with students on food waste and the global challenge of feeding nine billion people.

“This grant has allowed us to develop and deliver specialized components for high school students participating in Specialist High Skills Major programs – experiential learning programs that connect high school students with real world information about the agri-food sector,” says Colleen Smith, Executive Director.
